The second tree planting hosted by Many Feathers and the Lisgar Residents' Association was a success! On a rainy Saturday morning volunteers from the Lisgar/Meadowvale community came out to plant 180 trees in Lisgar Fields. We had about 40 residents of the community come out to the tree planting including Ward 10 Councillor Sue McFadden!
Led by the One Million Trees initiative through the City of Mississauga volunteers planted trees, shrubs, and even roses to beautify and make our community greener. The goal of the 1 Million Trees initiative is to add 1 million trees to Mississauga by the year 2032. The current count of total trees planted is 245,000 trees.
Many Feathers has planted 260 trees as of May 2017.
After a quick tutorial on how best to plant a tree, volunteers took to digging and bringing over mulch to protect the ones already in the ground.
Here are 3 reasons why trees are a good thing for the Lisgar community and why we host these kinds of events:
- Provide shelter and help the local wildlife thrive.
Creating parks and pathways is amazing for the community but can have a big impact on local wildlife. New trees provide shelter and support for existing habitats.
- Cleaner air for all!
Trees absorb odours and pollutant gases from their surroundings and act as filters. This means the more trees, the more filters at work! This is especially useful near road ways where car pollutants have a negative effect on air quality.
- Trees prevent climate change!
Climate change is a pressing issue that affects everyone. By planting trees we help reduce the excess CO2 from the atmosphere. In a year an acre of mature trees absorb the amount of CO2 produced when you drive your car 26,000 miles. That's a huge impact!
It was overcast, and raining for the duration of the event, but we pushed through and had a good time getting trees in the ground and then warming up with coffee afterwards.
We were planting in the same location as our September 2016 Tree Planting, and we noticed a little bird had found a cozy spot where a tree from last year was planted. Unfortunately, it was vandalized, but it was nice to see it was still a comfortable place to rest for the little guy!
By the time we had finished planting all 180 trees we worked together to spread out more mulch around the trees as a final task.
With the help of community groups, non-profits, and local representatives we are able to reach out to more members of our community and strive for a greener future! Thank you for supporting environmental initiatives in your area, and keep an eye out for future events like this!
We were provided coffee thanks to Starbucks (Walmart SmartCentre, 3035 Argentia Rd.)
